Fragile items are the most common casualties of poorly planned moves. Glassware shatters, electronics crack, and artwork gets scratched when packing standards aren't met. Follow these professional techniques to protect your most delicate possessions.
Start with quality materials. Standard cardboard boxes won't suffice for fragile collections — use double-walled corrugated boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, foam sheets, and dish pack boxes with cellular dividers. For high-value artwork, consider custom wooden crating.
Wrap each item individually. Glasses and mugs should be stuffed with packing paper and wrapped in bubble wrap before placement in divided boxes. Plates should be stacked vertically with paper between each piece, never flat. Electronics need anti-static bubble wrap and original-style padding.
Fill empty spaces within boxes completely. Items that shift during transport are items that break. Use crumpled packing paper or foam peanuts to eliminate movement. Mark every fragile box clearly on all sides with "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP" labels.
For large fragile items like mirrors and glass tabletops, apply painter's tape in an X pattern across the surface to prevent shattering, then wrap in bubble wrap and place in fitted cardboard enclosures. Transport these items vertically whenever possible.
